The title is a work in progress – Stories of Black Birth
The premise – to share the stories of the experiences of black and minority ethnic women within the UK maternity system.
The aim – to look at our cultural competency and create change and an equitable system by encouraging birthworkers to listen to the stories and not pass them off as what happens ‘to all women’.
Future aims – to build a Cultural Competency for Birth workers eCourse
So far I am planning to do this for 10 episodes. I’m going to brainstorm, storyboard and line up some stories. It may be that I end up doing two topics with 5 episodes each. I’ll know more by the end of tomorrow. I’m off call, so have blocked the day for admin, study and eCourse work.
That’s right GEA people. You’ve created a monster lol
September 5, 2017 at 3:48 pm #50286Yippee! So glad to hear you’re all revved up for the next challenge. This sounds like such a valuable contribution to your profession. Is there anything like this in the U.K.? Sounds progressive to me!
September 5, 2017 at 4:04 pm #50296Hey @laurakoller No, there’s nothing like this in the UK.
Completing the first challenge was such an ego boost. And I’m loving seeing that I’m currently 15th on the Bajillionaires list. This second challenge will help build the audience that I want for Cultural Competency and BAME people in the birth world. Just gotta get the stories down so that I can start recording. I’m going to look at Anchor.fm as well. You know.. now that I’m a clapperboard winning videographer … might as well go for radio broadcaster of the year. lol
September 5, 2017 at 6:43 pm #50311It never hurts to dream – especially when you have the courage and determination to make things happen!!!
September 6, 2017 at 4:46 am #50349You are a wonderful encourager @laurakoller
September 6, 2017 at 11:45 am #50382What a beautiful project. I’m sure you’ll feel super fulfilled in pulling out these birth stories. No doubt once you get some episodes done, you’ll be able to reach out to other birthworkers and ask them to share the stories as well.
Love that we created a monster. ROAR!
September 6, 2017 at 1:23 pm #50384Thank you @bradleytmorris I am looking forward to making it.
September 9, 2017 at 2:46 pm #50580Hi @mars, so nice to hear that last month’s challenge made you feel empowered! I bet you’ll love podcasting. It’s a lot less stressful than making videos 🙂
September 9, 2017 at 7:12 pm #50585Hey @mars
Wow, what a potent topic you are diving into. I applaud your work a cultural creative and change maker!
I just launched my first couple episodes on Anchor.fm, It was very easy which I liked and it was fun to be able to easily pick background music. I have had a few ppl (literally 3) find me organically on Anchor day 1. My take so far is that you do need to share your posts to your existing network and get some traffic. I’m interested to see how easy or challenging it is to build an organic audience on Anchor.
I’d be happy to stay in touch with you about this and share what we are learning if you choose to use it.
All the best,
Chris G
September 10, 2017 at 3:25 am #50597Hey @chrisg please do be in touch and share. I’m about to go watch my son play football (soccer to you on that side of The Pond) and work through the script for the first show. I’m thinking anchor.fm and the length of episode.
September 10, 2017 at 3:32 am #50601Ooh… forgot. I’ve been nominated for an award, so I’m hoping that that will bring some new traffic to my site and it also means that I need to get the plugins sorted rather quickly.
I’m off to Spain for a week on Wednesday, so I’ll be recording some of my episodes whilst there.
September 12, 2017 at 6:20 am #50685Woah! Congratulations on the award nomination Mars. That’s brilliant, and is sure to bring you some traffic to your site.
I love the topic of your show, and think it is very much needed here in the UK and will be very well received – excellent choice! I agree with Kato wholeheartedly, the podcasts will not be nearly as stressful as the videos so you’re going to ace this no problem. Kudos to you for doing it while on holiday in Spain – love your passion!
September 12, 2017 at 10:53 am #50833Thank you @kato and @saramccann
I’m definitely checking out anchor.fm
September 20, 2017 at 3:11 am #53449I’m just sitting here echoing and cheering you on… What incredibly powerful messages and stories you will be sharing!
I have a place deep in my heart for stories that don’t get told and heard and I run a Playback Theatre company where we seek out communities of diverse people to share them publicly. Wish we were closer… we could bring your stories to life on stage!
I also love your courageous attitude to diving into new realms and enjoying your new found wealth!
All the power to you, Mars!
