Some of us are made for changing the way things are done. We see the problems with the status quo in a way that most people don’t see. And we feel driven to change it. Too often we are stopped from expressing ourselves out of a fear of disapproval from the majority. We live in silence and breed a feeling of resentment as others freely express the more normal views to us but we don’t feel the same freedom to express our views. And we feel a little dead inside.

I will make walk in the park to empower the dormant world changers into action. Because the world needs them to show up at their best.

I’m devoting the next 4 Tuesdays to it.

    Love your topic, Paulo…

I think it’s possible that being a small business owner for nearly 30 years, I have learned to swallow a lot of my personal views and perspectives particularly on subjects that can be polarizing with people. I guess my theory has been that differences of opinions or viewpoints aren’t a good reason to alienate clients or lose business. Still, who wants to work with someone who would fire you because you see things differently in the first place. Curious to see if you can make me, say, publish a highly opinionated piece or two of writing work that I’ve been too scared to share, or express aloud I guess:)

P.S. For some reason, when I think about your canoe video, I keep thinking…Dancing on the Sea with Paulo…

Thanks for sharing that Sue-Ann. I totally hear what you are saying and will keep it in mind. I’m not yet 100% clear as to what the mini course will be but I think it will be more about having the freedom to allow yourself to have influence, more than feeling like you can say anything to anybody. There are things you can say to someone that will make them flip out and think you are crazy. And there is something you can share with that same person that will make them think. Maybe they will think you are a bit crazy in the moment, but not enough to run away. And in pushing their point of view you are helping them grow. I agree you don’t want to be too different from your customers, but if you can be a bit edgy and slowly push them to expand their perspective they will become your most loyal fans. The people I want to reach with this are those who are just pretending to agree, and they are not having any influence on the people around them.

I think I hear what you’re saying, Paulo.

I love the idea of “maybe they think you’re crazy, but not enough to run away!” Here’s what I do to try to open people’s mind in non-business settings or discussions, generally. (Maybe this is because I’m always willing to hear another perspective on any topic and willing to at least listen without being pre-convinced that you can’t change my mind, or open it, or teach me something…oops back to technique…) So, I try to frame an idea to offer a new perspective by asking questions. This is to defuse people’s reactions to an outside idea or opinion, eh er…at least my technique. Funny though, if people are strongly set in their opinion, they will take even a question as YOUR opinion, when often I like to bring up ideas or possibilities that aren’t at all my opinion, but just something to add to the discussion or throw in another idea. Food for thinking…

Quick update. I did some fixing of the script for the videos, and got the website ready, and made the pdf download. Starting to doubt that it will have much value. I’m commited to finishing it anyways.

Ah! Doubt is a clear sign of an idea that is worth pursuing  😉

Any idea how many times @andyfreist and I have doubted this silly mountain we made.

Plenty. Even still it pops up.

Create it for creativity’s sake and then decide what to do with it when you’re done.

At the very least, you’re getting some great experience and no doubt, learning a lot!

Thanks Bradley. I hear you. I know you guys had doubts I saw the epic slap.
Funny thing is the few people I have met who never have doubts are scarry. Wouldn’t want to be them. I will put the mini course out there and let people decide for themselves if it’s useful.
    Thanks,
    Paulo

Hey it’s almost done. The videos are up. I just need to go over it and make sure everything is working, and try to pretend I am a customer and feel the experience. I will put the link up here in a few days.

That was a fun project. The best thing I got out of it is that I learned I can put something together and test it out quickly. I’m also finding ways to be more efficient with my video editing.

I’m not sure if this qualifies as an official launch but here it is http://www.gear.comfortpaddling.net/change-the-world/

It was a good exercise for getting things finished. And also a good practice for sharing more authentically. Something I’m trying to get better at in business. And personal life too but in business is where the biggest gap is.

In this series of videos I share what has inspired me to be more bold and to share more. As I do you may notice you can start to see right through me at times. Not sure if that’s my ego disolving or not enough lighting on me, or not enough lighting on the green screen.

    Thanks,
    Paulo
