Health-caring: how to use patient-focused communication to improve results
(it’s still not perfect because.. what kind of results?)I struggle with “infusing more heart into health care” because it’s not clear to me that you are speaking metaphorically.. since it’s about health care and infusions it could be some kind of mashed up bovine heart extract that people are being taught to infuse (for some reason, lol). It needs to be really clear what the course is teaching…who is it for and what will you be teaching them and what is the desired result? Infusing more heart into health care is a really big and broad goal, and that coupled with the very medical-procedure sounding metaphor, is hard for me to grasp as to what is actually being taught. I liked your earlier ideas more

Our evil plan of having a community that is supportive, self sufficient and in service to each other is working!
So I have a question for you Laura:
- Knowing how much energy it takes to do ONE thing really well. What is the ONE thing (business-wise) that you are going to focus your energy on 100% for the next 1-2 years? Is it Health Caring? Motivation Superhero? Other?
I think this health caring idea has some huge power behind it and i could see you quickly becoming an expert in this field, helping healthcare professionals bringing more heart and humanness to caring for their patients.
I love all the tag lines that you’ve come up with. There are some great ones.
Which one best describes your WHAT, WHO, VIBE, HOW?
October 9, 2017 at 9:33 am #57882Hmm ‘infusing more heart into healthcare’ doesn’t really grab me like the others did. Sorry! I think maybe Bradley has hit the nail on the head as to what you need to think about next really.
What I have seen come across from you, since knowing you on this mountain, is your constant smile, (even though i don’t see you, i feel it in your words) your love and compassion, the way you champion everyone and support as much as you can (even when you’re struggling yourself) I think those qualities are what I want to see come across in a tagline and title. That you will show people a better way, with love, communication, and understanding and by doing so, transform, the old and outdated way that simply isn’t working.
I do see you as the superhero of this industry, the one who dares to be different and lead a better way forward. The one that everyone else will aspire to be more like. I do think the superhero is your vibe.
But…that’s all my thoughts, and I know sometimes too many thoughts can have a detrimental effect. Go with your heart and your instincts for the answers to the what, who & vibe question that Bradley asked…I think you’ll find the answers are there waiting for you. 😉
October 9, 2017 at 11:18 am #57903@bradleytmorris – Evil plan, indeed! This community is addicting!!!
At this time, HealthCaring is the ONE thing that needs my focus right now. This is my “niche” audience, my “niche” message. I’m confident I can make this happen within a 1-2 year time span. Look at all that I’ve accomplished in the HealthCaring arena since my first company seminar in February – multiple speaking engagements, positive feedback, obvious hunger for the concept. All that time, I haven’t even given it my full attention because I’ve been pursuing Motivation Superhero as my side project. So now that I’ve earned a few feathers and I’m choosing to pursue this project full-time (figuratively, not actually), I’m confident I can get this fledgling to fly.
That being said, still thinking of using lauraboothkoller.com as the site, and building out HealthCaring from that site. Later on, I can link to other programs such as Motivation Superhero and a few others I’ve got on the back burner, simmering away. That way I don’t have to start all over each time – I can just create a new tile/link.
I think that during the move to this new concept, I’ve lost my theme. I may benefit from going back to that step in the process. I think the Superhero theme can still fit, I can even refer to the Motivation Superhero (or perhaps a superhero by another name). But perhaps if I look at each element as a superpower it may kindle the fire with more inspiration and give more power to the concept. HealthCaring Hero? I think maybe that’s a little too much noise in one phrase. The great thing is I haven’t spent money on a domain name so as much as I think HealthCaring resonates with me and conveys something meaningful and appropriate, I’m not financially tied to it in any way.
I appreciate feedback and support from all of you. I’ll need to dedicate some more time to thinking corner.
October 9, 2017 at 11:24 am #57905What if I piggyback on the concept of Motivation Superhero, i.e. Motivation Superhero for Healthcare Professionals ???
Still not sure where that lands me with a tagline, but it could be a step in the right direction.
October 9, 2017 at 11:26 am #57907Me again…just been thinking. Not sure if it will help or confuse (I hope the former) However, if you feel your mind starting to fog and feel overwhelmed skip this post completely as you need clarity right now, not more confusion.
I was part of a marketing group a little while ago (it was great, but just didn’t reflect where I was at on my online journey and needed to drop all things that weren’t floating my boat for financial reasons) and I recall one of the first things they taught us was about discovering your brand. Here’s a few tasks they set us which I am sharing in the hope it might help you find your way.
- Write out all the ways you want to be perceived. (try to list about 30 values) Think about what you would want someone to say about you when you’re not in the room, your strengths, what makes you different, what makes you better, why would someone choose you over the competition, what values do you hold of the upmost importance and why do you do what you do?
- Once you have this list cross out any words that are industry specific (any that pretty much everyone in your industry would say about themselves)
- Decide on your top 3 from those remaining. These are your stand out headline values. (Your style, headlines, taglines etc should all reflect these brand values)
- Now decide on your passion. Why do you do what you do? What’s your purpose and why do you want to help the people you want to help?
- Now think about your customer avatar. Give them an age, gender, location, job title, level of education, goals and ambitions, values, challenges they face, what makes them laugh and cry, what worries them.
- Now think about how they will change after you have helped them.
- Lastly…think about your arch enemy. This would be someone in your field who has opposing values to yourself. Who and what is your arch enemy and why? What do you vow you would never do like your arch enemy would do?
The arch enemy bit was what reminded me to mention it to you as it fits with your superhero idea…motivation superhero could have an arch enemy…what would that arch enemy be like and what kind of things do they do. I just wonder if you think on these points if it might steer you a bit nearer to your who, what, why and vibe and all of that will hopefully make your tagline be crystal clear?
I hope so…sending love, brain power and inspiration your way! 😉
October 9, 2017 at 11:35 am #57910@saramccann – What a great exercise! I think you’re right that I may need to step back and view this from a larger perspective.
HEY (duh) if I go with the Motivation Superhero theme THEN I DON’T NEED ANOTHER TAGLINE because it’s still the same thing: Dare to Do Something Different Today. If it doesn’t work, then try something different. And if something different does work, then bygosh make sure to share it so others may benefit.
Still not sure what that means about website – maybe change it (authenticity and credibility cited by sara mccann in an earlier post) or maybe just keep it the same (consistency of message). Probably not worth spending too much time on the decision. Just pick an option and go with it for now.
I’m going to chalk up this whole side-trip to a case of resistance. It’s that whole vulnerability thing – wanting to do this but still hesitating as well. Join the club, right?
October 10, 2017 at 6:05 am #58049I think the website, headline, tagline and everything will come to you once you step back from this and get perspective. I just know that this is inside you, all the answers are there….it just needs a way out!
And once you have that you’ll fly! ( like a superhero should! 😉 )
October 11, 2017 at 5:47 am #58186Is HealthCaring.com or ProjectHealthCaring.com available?
I think you need a website dedicated to this, because you are building a whole new philosophy and way of doing health/client care in the world. You’re creating a new set of standards and principles to follow. I think if you tried to merge this with your personal brand or Motivation superhero brand, it’d lose its’ potency.
I could see you teaching workshops, online courses, classes, training programs and creating your own certification for people to go through and get certified with the “HealthCaring Certificate” or whatever, that shows they have this training. I think you’ve got something that could grow wings and fly @laurakoller.
Keep it simple and scaleable.
October 11, 2017 at 6:58 am #58196@bradleytmorris – Thanks for your input. I appreciate your insight. You’ve captured my vision for the scope of this project – and you’re right. It’s not an add-on. This is the main act, the showstopper. If this is my only journey to the top of the mountain, I can feel as though I’ve achieved a meaningful purpose. This is my two-decades journey into humanities, education, and healthcare and I am uniquely qualified to lead this project. So yes, it deserves its own website. This isn’t about villains and masks and super capes. This is about being real from the core of our beings, from deep within our hearts.
That being said, I do think I need to rethink the THEME of this course. I need to add some livelihood and spirit to it. I’m not sure about continuing with the superhero idea. There may be a better direction. At the moment, though, it feels like a lot of idea and philosophy and I need something to make it concrete and tangible. Something you can hold in the palm of your hand. Maybe that fledgling bird that can grow wings and take flight?
More thinking ahead.
October 11, 2017 at 9:11 am #58206So here’s my latest thinking – something along the lines of The Anatomy of HealthCaring and the visual of The HealthCaring Human. AH! Wait! It just hit me. I was just going to say it’s kind of like the game of Operation. So maybe that’s what this can be – OPERATION HEALTHCARING!!!
So there’s a body (like the one for Operation) and there are mini-courses for different parts of the anatomy. There’s HealthCaring Ears (that’s the power of listening), HealthCaring Brain/Head (that’s the power of neuroscience), HealthCaring Mouth (that’s what we say to patients). I’m trying to think about how I can include more than just the head, so maybe I can have the HealthCaring Knee (our reflexive patterns of teaching and behaving that are not as effective as we’d like them to be). Maybe HealthCaring Hands (how we craft our teaching/picking up a piece of chalk for the chalkboard) or Feet (how we stay grounded and resilient even when things get tough)? I’ll have to go check out my son’s Operation game and see if I can come up with something even more clever.
What do you think? I think it would be worthwhile to figure out my theme before choosing the name of my domain.
Many of the HealthCaring domain names have been purchased, though not crafted yet. There is HealthCaring.info site that shares an idea of HealthCARING (“to reset health mindsets and attitudes while tapping into positive human nature”) and a book called HealthCaring: a Reset for Health and Healthcare. This guy’s ideas and mine are along the same lines – he talks about cues, behaviors, mindsets, and human nature. In contrast, though, his writing is very verbose and his applications are very broad. I want to take a similar concept and put this into terms that healthcare professionals can actually relate to and put into everyday practice.
So now I’m thinking – OperationHealthCaring.com
October 11, 2017 at 10:36 am #58227In my humble opinion – YES, YES YES! This idea has me excited! Just the word ‘operation’ before healthcare gives it a whole new, more exciting edge…and then…then you combine it with the playful nature of the game operation and wham! Suddenly you have taken the boring (sorry) topic of healthcare to something very different, engaging and tantalising!
It makes me want to care more about my heatlth because it sounds more fun. I also think that your tagline of ‘dare to do something different today’ works well with it because it IS different and unique. A whole new perspective and attitude towards healthcaring…taking it out of the dark ages into the new! LOVE it!
Soo excited about this!!
October 11, 2017 at 11:12 am #58235@saramccann – YES! I, too, was feeling like the idea was lacking an engagement element. I’m glad to hear that resonates with you. It was kind of the picture in my head for Motivation Superhero – an Operation-type body with different elements that you would earn to insert into the body instead of take away with a steady hand.
I’m thinking I could start with the SMILE – The SMILE Manifesto – as the free component of my course. That could be relatively easy to build out, since I already have material for that. And then the Creative Ways to Teach Patients could come next, unless I want to make that the Brain Badge (Mindset, Habits – it’s a lot about heads and neuroscience).
And if you’re thinking about caring more about your health, then I need to be sure I specify that this is intended for healthcare professionals to become better practitioners of healthcare. Later on, I could figure out how to carry this over to people caring for their own health. (Actually I was thinking more of Operation ParentCaring which could be a fairly seamless transition – but gotta keep my focus right now!)
Thinking more about tagline…
October 12, 2017 at 3:50 am #58304Yesterday I was at the library and a children’s book about the human body caught my eye (reminded me of the game of Operation) so I checked it out and brought it home and I was inspired by some of these descriptions of the heart:
“The heart is at the core of your body machine, beating without a break all your life Each beat pumps a red river of blood along a vast network of vessels. The blood supplies your body’s cells with whatever they need to thrive and stay healthy.”
“The same size as a fist, your heart is a powerful, muscular pump that pushes blood around your body. It beats without resting to supply your body with oxygen, nutrients, and other essentials, and to remove their waste.”
Doesn’t that sound a lot like my vision for the role of healthcare providers? The hearts and heartbeats of healthcare? And what an appropriate metaphor, linked together with the game of Operation.
So, inspired by that, this is the latest version of my tagline:
Operation HealthCaring: Training Healthcare Professionals to Pump More Heart and Humanity into the Everyday Practice of Delivering the Best Care for Patients
or
Operation HealthCaring: Training Healthcare Professionals to Pump More Heart and Humanity into the Everyday Practice of Helping Patients to Thrive and Stay Healthy
October 12, 2017 at 5:29 am #58309LOVE how this is shaping up.
In another life I worked on creating a community and business for helping professionals. The metaphor of the heart was very potent and resonant. It guides me also. I have doctor friends who consider themselves “heart-centered” and am a big fan of Mark Silver’s Heart of Business trainings and community. So much to learn from about from the heart. It seems that relational and communication problems are caused by a lack of heart awareness and connection and the solutions cannot be deciphered by the brain (intellect categorizing and analysis) nor the gut (doing what is instinctive and known). That the heart is the intelligence we all have that fully understands emotions and drives and what is most needed in any complex human interaction.
Love how your tagline is getting clearer and more to the heart of the matter. : )
