I’ve started pulling together images to help me visualize the theme of my course. My course teaches how to automate repetitive tasks in Revit, a building information modeling software. Since my audience is architects and engineers, the course theme revolves around the transformation of a backwards town (Manual Town) into a thriving city of the future (Automatopolis). At each module, students will learn computer programming concepts, complete an automation project and “build” a part of Automatopolis.
I started three mood boards; one for Manual Town, Automatopolis and some general construction imagery. Here are the links:

Curious what your thoughts are for how you’re going to teach the lessons to bring that theme to life? Looking forward to learning more!
February 2, 2017 at 11:46 am #34650Yeah, I’m struggling with how to tie the lessons to the overall theme.
I want to relate each lesson to a phase in the process of building Automatopia. The first lesson, which covers the very basics of programming, would relate to putting in the foundation and infrastructure of Automatopia. In the second lesson, students will write their first program. This would relate to constructing the first building. And so on until the whole city is built. I’m planning for 8 – 10 lessons.
One idea I have is to use each lesson to address a “problem” that’s encountered while “building” the current phase of Automatopia. For example, in the third lesson, I teach how to batch create drawings in Revit using data from Excel. To tie this into the theme, I would frame the lesson as “the Automatopia construction team ran into a problem and needs your help”. In order to keep the project on track, the student needs to create an automation to solve the problem. By completing the challenge, construction can proceed and that part of Automatopia gets built.
What do you think? I’m trying to balance real-world scenarios but also fit them within the context of the theme.

Great work!!!!
February 2, 2017 at 12:46 pm #34668Thanks Bobbie Jo!
February 3, 2017 at 5:56 pm #34680I love your ideas. I think working it in like a real life situation is GREAT!
Curious what you see your role being in the videos?
The foreman, project director, etc…?
February 4, 2017 at 6:04 pm #34731Yes, I see my role as the foreman. I’ll be wearing the hard hat and acting as the Obi-Wan figure. I may also play some other characters as the need arises. I’m working through my outline now. Fun stuff!
February 6, 2017 at 12:55 pm #34769I love it. So stoked to see you having this much fun on the journey. Excited to see your creations come to life! Keep soaking in the magic of the mountain.
February 6, 2017 at 10:35 pm #34818Brilliant. Keep it up, you’re on the right track. 🙂
February 11, 2017 at 2:53 am #34964This is such a great idea! It sounds like a lot of fun. I loved the mood boards that you have.

March 20, 2017 at 8:12 am #36170Uber creative! I am inspired by the degree of creativity within this group. I also hear that you are considering the audience and what will inspire them to stay engaged in learning.
March 20, 2017 at 3:11 pm #36211Thanks everyone! I took a little break from the course but all these good vibes have me fired up as I get back to work.
March 28, 2017 at 4:53 am #36679Hey Chief Architect of Automatropolis, how’s construction going!? 😉
March 31, 2017 at 4:54 pm #36848Hey Michael,
I really love where you are going with this and the theme & mood board ideas as well. I personally would like this course applied to just being a entrepreneur in general.
Hearing that your target audience is engineers & architects, I would imagine many of them are very analytical type thinkers. It may be useful to have some good examples of the application of your concepts used in the architect and engineering field.could a video start with aa problem being presented “the Automatopia construction team ran into a problem and needs your help”, then presents how your tools/system has solved a architecture/engineering problem elsewhere as an example, then say “how can we apply this to your unique problem or this specific lesson?
Without really understanding your field, my comment may not actually be helpful, but it was the first thing that came to mind.
Looking forward to watching the project progress.
Cheers,
Chris
