And while I’m happy to learn the aspects that I’m not already proficient at, I’m not sure I can do it all at once.
I’m working on my Manifesto, so that will help clarify who I want to work with in all this.
June 11, 2016 at 6:47 am #24973That’s quite a team Batman.
Great to see your process in thinking this through. I think I might even pinch this and tweak it to describe my dream team! My version only had about 4 people in it which probably is symptomatic of my constant wish to do all the things. MUST LET OTHERS HELP!
Thanks for sharing.
🙂
June 11, 2016 at 8:44 am #24975Yeah, I’m really wrestling with wanting to get better at most (maybe all?!) these abilities but knowing I can’t grow very far by myself.
Was part of a conversation on fb this week about how many employees is the “right size” and figuring out whether you’re building a business that you can walk away from and eventually sell versus a business that is highly reliant on you as the hub. Many people chimed in that they had done the many employees version and are much happier shrinking down to a couple employees/partners.
Independent of that conversation, I’m now pondering how much I want to learn to do on my own and how much I want to learn about managing/coordinating people…
What do I want to be if/when I grow up?!
So, more things to ponder…
June 11, 2016 at 4:54 pm #24995Awesome Wayne! You pretty much covered all bases there..
All in all, to fill all those jobs we’ve got 4 people. And a 5th person who is managing our FB ads.
Big courses take big teams.
Glad you are being realistic with what you need and laying the foundation for the right crew to come your way 🙂
Excited to see your manifesto!
June 11, 2016 at 7:30 pm #25007This is awesome Dr. Wayne. If you build it (the List), they will come!
I understand what you’re wrestling thing.
Perhaps going down the list and asking yourself a question like:
Which of these tasks brings me joy or gets me excited? Which are a 9 or 10 out of 10?
Which of these tasks drain me, stress me out or take my energy away from what I want to be doing?
Perhaps that’ll help decide what you want to pass off…
June 11, 2016 at 8:20 pm #25009I’ve also been wrestling with this with another, pre-GEA, accountability partner. One conclusion we came to is that while I would love to learn to do most of these skills, I don’t need to do them all in my course development itself. I can have the learning aspect happen as a hobby separate from the business side.
Of course, this doesn’t actually resolve much, but since I can do any of the tasks, that gives me freedom to bring folks in for most any of the tasks. I suspect much of the writing and development work would be more enjoyable when done collaboratively.
For now, I plan to keep plugging away and see what unfolds. I have the tools in place and the summer “free” to work on it all.
June 12, 2016 at 1:07 am #25021That is an excellent exercise! I am a bit like @lisa.russell in that I tend to want to do everything myself. I can’t even outsource my .pds to fiverr….
June 12, 2016 at 2:13 pm #25036What a great post, I love how you have broken everything down because I feel like I can copy and paste the bits I need to help figure out my team! Thanks for sharing.
It looks like you are creating something epic here. This thread has got me thinking along the lines Brad was laying down. I’m wondering how many people I work best with…sometimes I like big groups, but starting small has it’s benefits and is more practical for where I’m at personally. I’m kind of thinking, which of these jobs do I like least/am the least talented at, so that I can hire that person 1st…I think I’d go for a video editor first.
June 16, 2016 at 7:22 pm #25295Thanks Penny. Thanks Jessica. Glad you found my list useful.
I’m still sitting with this — like I have for the last however many months-years since I started brain dumping all the roles I play with the intention of hiring/partnering some off of my plate.
I’ve definitely got some belief work waiting for me around this particular area. And, until I make the time to do that belief work, I’m going to keep playing along and see how each of the roles naturally waxes and wanes.
June 18, 2016 at 9:48 am #25426Or is your belief work about your belief work a belief in itself and in fact you are perfect and ridiculously divine!?
Hmmmmmm….
June 18, 2016 at 12:13 pm #25433Brad, I can believe that AND do some rearranging of beliefs.
🙂
June 20, 2016 at 7:59 am #25469Nice!!!
