Week 1: January 27, 2018
Just finishing up the pre-journey items about to enter Basecamp. Created my introduction video, so I’m looking forward to that 500 Bajillion bonus. I’ll be continuing the journey as well connecting with folks in the community.
Just finished BaseCamp. I can’t say that I have any fears per se’ regarding this journey, but a healthy concern that I will have the time to work through this journey in a reasonable time. I have a Buddy that is outside of this community that I meet with on a weekly basis, but I want to post for huddle buddy within this community to have someone to share the experience with. I have an existing daily ritual, and I have scheduled time on my calendar to work on this course. Ok, onto Reflection Pond.
Reflection Pond Lesson 2: Your Big Why. My why is deeply personal and not one I choose to share at this time, but know that I have completed this exercise and captured in my journal my WHY. I review this a part of my daily morning ritual. Journal now up to date. Onto MaporaMeadows.
Mapora Meadow was spot on regarding “the transformation experience” that students/clients will have as a result of your training. This can often be missed in corporate training programs which often have short time frames, and little creativity. Good instructional designers will be clear on instructional outcomes, i.e., “by the end of this course you will be able to …”, but they rarely connect back to or insure a transformational results. Like Brad shared in the Episode 11 bonus, it should be more of a transformation experience versus an informational experience. Talking faster or dumping more information is not the answer. I also appreciated the encouragement to inventory and reuse all that we have done in the past. Why start from scratch if you don’t have to. Okay, onto Architekt Forrest, woo-hoo!
Architekt Forrest: Thanks for the Idea Generator spreadsheet. My top two ideas are: How to clean the audio on your videos (a Walk in the Park on ways to get as pristine audio quality on your video recordings as possible), and How to insure clean audio when you record your videos (a related topic of how to get the cleanest recording in the first place, so you can avoid or reduce all what I will teach in the previous course). Completed the worksheets: What, Why, Who, How, etc., but they need additional refinement. Need to let it all percolate in my brain for a while. I’m not trying to go for the mother load on my first time up the mountain. I have an internal audience (i.e., for my current corporate day job) in mind for this first training, so it is less about selling it, and more about applying the learning. The transformational experience is all very applicable as the payoff of this training has a currency (valuable for career, increased trust & credibility, greater confidence) it’s just not cash.

Working on adding more details to the activities in Creatora Heights. Skipped ahead a bit to at least get through the content of Validation Swamp, as this is all the stuff leading up to working on the actual course. Seems like a logical break point. I will work all the activities and get validation before moving on in the training.
January 28, 2018 at 7:54 pm #67649Love it @stavido. You are jogging up the mountain at a good pace.
Make sure you don’t skip too much of Creatora. The lesson on themifying your course is crucial 😉
Love everything you’re sharing and am excited to see how you bring this audio course to life!
January 29, 2018 at 4:13 am #67657Don’t worry, each morning this week I’m reviewing and refining my answers to all the exercises I went through this weekend. I wasn’t planning on spending 20 hours in the course, but it was it fun and energizing – not something I have felt in a long time from the eLearning I usually have to consume. I have made spending an hour in the morning on this part of my daily routine, so I’ll be shoring up my notes and really honoring your process. I know how to do much of what is in the this course, but you have done a tremendous job in thinking through the transformations and purpose of each of the lessons, so I want to experience that process. You have me thinking about things in a fresh perspective. Thank you.
January 30-31, 2018
Posted the details of Architekt 8: Refine, refine, refine exercise to the Course Ideas & Outline campfire. (Clean Audio – So Your Videos Don’t Suck.) Receive helpful feedback, and was greatly encouraged by the positive responses to my course idea. Spent some time making connections with others on the mountain, reviewing their progress and commenting. Continued to refine my course topics and start the lesson planning.
February 1, 2018
Finished going through the Automatora River and Saless Canyon checkpoints, but need to stop here while I catch up on the activities of Creatora Heights. Can’t really value my course until I have a better understanding of the scope and details of the course. I have been an ActiveCampaign user for 18 months so Automatora River was more of a review. I did find some nuggets in the “Deep Dive Lesson on ActiveCampaign” video. Thanks Bran and Andy.
February 2, 2018
Had to see how the GEA story ended, so I watched the remaining videos. I guess it is like binge watching a show. After that I returned to working on fleshing out my course. Reviewed Creatora 1 & 2 content and applied the exercises to my Clean Audio course (just a placeholder title for now).
February 4, 2018 at 12:49 pm #68188Week 2: February 3, 2018
Spent time with my wife exploring possible themes. Had a realization in reviewing the Architekt-8 lesson that the vibe, theme, and characters are separate things. I was trying to group them together up front and that was bogging me down. We kept talking about the characteristics of the course and the idea of total makeover shows like TLC’s What Not to Wear (or as my wife joked about my course, What Not to Hear). It’s clever, but I’m not sure I want to go with that specific theme, doesn’t seem broad enough in appeal to use as the theme/metaphor for my course.
February 4, 2018
Decided to complete the Refined Architekture challenge and submit it since I am through Architekt Forest content. (My entry)
This challenge stimulated me to think more broadly on the “Make Over” theme, which is really resonating with me.
Making good progress today refining my major modules, their mini-transformations, and the lessons needed based on a “make over show” theme. Will be following a 5-Act Play structure like those used on these shows (well more or less). This is my working premise for now. We’ll see how well it plays out. (Just have to not over think it).
February 5, 2018
Finally made it to one of the Monday live coaching sessions, albeit 20 minutes late.
February 5, 2018 at 9:18 pm #68305Glad you made it @stavido. Hope you enjoyed our time with Jon.
Wondering where you’re at with the theme today? Any new clarity?
So many directions you could go.
I’m not 100% sold on the make-over theme.
The theme needs to be something that’ll resonate with your audience. How can you bring them into your story and make the journey of learning better audio exciting for them?
Lets keep brainstorming OR refining the current idea if you’re feeling it!

@bradleytmorris, so what kind of story you think of when you think about learning to fix/produce better audio?
February 6, 2018 at 11:13 am #68333Okay, so this is the first thing I thought of….
“EARS OF BEETHOVEN”
Teach your students to develop a keener sense of what is good audio, what is bad audio and how to attune themselves and learn the tech skills necessary to create audio experiences that even Beethoven would be proud of.
The “Ears of Beethoven” part is a play because Beethoven was deaf and therefore had to listen through feeling the vibrations. I could see you having a lot of fun with this path.
So that was my first idea.
What do you think?
February 7, 2018 at 3:51 am #68374I also could use this course and am loving how you are developing it @stavido!
Are you looking for names or themes…?
I would be captivated by something that spoke to the result I need… not to become a master sound guy but to quickly learn how to clean up audio in my projects… So something cue words like… “Clear Message” or “Clean Sound” would be enough to make me stop and want to learn more.
Also, thinking about how sound is one area and how there are other layers to this, like helping us with speech patterns, location sounds, projecting authenticity… I see a lot of branches in the tree of clear messaging… And if you only wish to offer help with the audio quality end, maybe collaborating with or cross-promoting with folks who do the other layers could one day be mutually beneficial.
February 7, 2018 at 1:32 pm #68403You like the makeover theme, and I’m getting a “clean up” vibe from these selections. How about a Before and After, or This or That, or maybe just a “Clean Sweep” type of thing? I’m not sure that any of those is dripping with personality or characters. If you want to go silly, you could dress up in a maid’s uniform and put on a funny wig. Just one crazy idea that popped into my head!
February 7, 2018 at 1:40 pm #68407Or what about “Audio Heaven” as a theme.
Where it’s all white background and you’re in all white… kinda like an Audio Angel.
And you help people go from Audio Hell to Audio Heaven.
I could see you on a glistening white backdrop in all white, with JUST your audio mixing/editing gear. Could be a fun and simple brand/theme. The website itself would also look similar. Lots of white, heavenly cues.
Keep the ideas’a flowing.
I dig where Laura is going too. I could see you playing more of a “Audio Custodian/Janitor” in a “clean up your audio” course.

Thanks for the suggestions, and please keep sharing your ideas. A lot to think about. Definitely is busting loose the cobwebs on my creativity. I’m a kind of person who has to see the thread of an idea, the organizing principle that ties everything together, but once I get that look out. I really do appreciate the input, I don’t have a lot of “highly creatives” in my immediate circle, so this is fun!
February 7, 2018 at 2:11 pm #68415Are you looking for names or themes…?
@davidj, I’m looking for a theme right now. Once I have that I think the name will be easier, but having said that, some of the names others are throwing out there are getting me to think about themes.
My initial thoughts were to focus on a short course that I could use to get to the summit with, but I could definitely expand into some of the other aspects you mentioned. I teach a thee day course on how to facilitate, among other coaching I’ve done around speaking so I could create and teach this content.
I get a little concerned about the scope of doing that, but maybe that is something I can develop later. At a minimum you have stimulate my thinking to include more on the “human” aspect of audio. Even though there are great tools to clean, enhance, repair audio, you ultimately want to let your ears be your guide. Sometimes, you even add some noise to make for a better experience.
Does open up the possibility of collaborating with others who may be in the “how to speak” market.
February 8, 2018 at 8:36 pm #68494So good sir, where are you at today with the theme idea?
What is easy and makes sense? What would be the most fun for you to create?
February 9, 2018 at 3:15 am #68510So good sir, where are you at today with the theme idea? What is easy and makes sense? What would be the most fun for you to create?
Yes, my thinking exactly. I will be thinking through that and working on my course this weekend. Getting pounded with 10-12 inches of snow as we speak so it will be a perfect time to fire up a pot of coffee and focus on content creation.
This week I have been focusing on the technical stack as I have to get this going for a client of mine.It is technology stack that brought me to GEA. I saw the interview you did with the Learndash folks, so this part is very important to me. I already had ThriveThemes, ActiveCampaign, LearnDash and ActiveMember360 (AM360), so the Social Learner theme was all that I was missing to be able to reproduce what you are doing in GEA.
Had a setback with AM360 not working due to a PHP level compatibility issue on my hosting platform – lost a day – so it looks like I will be learning MembershipPro. That and there are about thousand plugins that get loaded when you fire up Social Learner.
I may have a colleague from my day job joining this community, so I am pretty excited about that, and I found an adventure buddy. It has been a productive albeit circuitous week in all.
February 10, 2018 at 5:18 am #68562My comments were not meant to overwhelm by suggesting you have all these layers in one gigantic ecourse that is never completed or “perfect” : )
I appreciate that you are seeing the value of a simple offering that is humble and bite sized yet gives your people what they need at one point in time.
Adding layers could be a way to create a suite of ecourses that work well together or as discreet micro adventures in learning and growth.
I love where you are headed and how discerning you are about how you’re planning…
