@bradleytomorris
Shaping the future is what this whole LMS side expedition is all about!
WE ARE IN.
As for Podia, yes, I looked at them. While I do love the simplicity & smooth design, it’s really set up to sell your course, much like Kajabi, vs. actually have a Themed social learning platform. Lacks key game and social engagement features. But, if you need a super easy, very affordable way to create a membership platform with basic courses. This works well.
UPDATE: WordPress Social Leaner
After tinkering around this week, I have discovered why BuddyBoss’ Social Learner theme seems so clunky…it’s the theme, along with BuddyPress. While the integration is superb, having THREE navigation bars (left static, top user profile icon, and then each group/course has it’s own navigation) is really crazy. I just tested this with people and watched how much time, and confusion it took to find what they wanted.
Then, I really looked at GEA and the areas where we really interact.
We only engage with Checkpoints, Challenges & Campfires. Lately, mostly campfires (forums). Is that because it’s all we care about…no. They are just the easiest to use.
Did you know, that we had no idea about your activity feeds/walls? That you can post there? There is so much opportunity with a discussion wall, and letting people use it like a facebook group.
In summary, Social Learner throws EVERY option at you. It really feels like Frankenstein under the hood with SO MANY plugins & integrations pieced together.
That’s why we’ve decided to go where no adventure has gone before!
While Social Learner is really good, it’s not the future.Things need to be simpler.
We are going to try something different, very different.
Image what the Mighty Networks LMS system would look if it had all the features (and then some) and was ready to use today.
Using wordpress, we’re going to attempt to have a fully function system in less than a day using learndash, Gamipress (points, badges & ranks) integrated with what appears to be the most robust Social Community Plugin: PeepSo
What I like, really like about PeepSo is that it’s like taking a Facebook group, and removing Facebook. You get an enclosed truly private environment where people feel safe, and can share really easy using an interface that they are familiar with. Super low learning curve.
IF we can make it do what we want in our themed course, which I’m pretty sure we can, it will make for a smooth, uncluttered virtual experience into our BadAss Island world.
Now, when I say functioning, I mean everything setup, installed, integrated & theme stuff done. The basics.
Then just like any LMS system out there, we’ll need add our content, build the points / rewards system…etc. This will take a bit longer.
I’m giving it 3 days to work with. If all goes well, we plan to use this until Mighty Networks has a fully functioning course system with gamification. By then, we’ll know if our strategy is working, or we need to migrate over to MN or Matrix LMS.

@movethinksmileI’m totally in. I have really been enjoying this thread.
I would love it if Brad/we put together a brainstorming Zoom meeting with everyone in this thread just to discuss platform, gamification and themeification. I think most of us are in the process of nailing down the moving parts or overall direction of our platforms.
I’m needing to make a decision by next week so would love to huddle around the first of next week if possible.
Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts and if we all would be interested in huddling.
Loving the journey up the mountain. It works so much better as a team!! 😉
April 19, 2018 at 8:17 am #73841@movethinksmile thank you so much for working through your process out-loud. It has been really helpful for the rest of us. I’m not a big researcher … so your gift here is such a blessing.
Please keep us posted on your big experiment:

I can’t wait to hear how that works out!
April 19, 2018 at 9:57 am #73843I’m looking forward to hearing how it goes @movethinksmile Feel like I need you here putting it all together for me lol.

April 22, 2018 at 9:14 pm #74027Thank you for this very helpful thread and for sharing all your research! Will the original post in this thread be available as download for future reference?
I wish I could make it to the live session on Monday at 12 noon PST, but I have a client. Will there be a zoom recording?
Thanks so much!
April 23, 2018 at 12:29 am #74033Thanks @movethinksmile awesome! We use Learndash/social learner I think Might Networks sound great but I’m wary of it until a bit further down the track (based on feedback from my sis who uses it for her network).
I’m not techy but I found it very quick and easy to outsource the set up and tech via Up work. The woman helping us is great and very affordable.
April 23, 2018 at 6:56 am #74040@bradleytmorris and all adventurers.
It took us less than 24 hours to get the basics of LearnDash and PeepSo up and running. Also, the PeepSo team gave me access to Beta 4 of their LearnDash integration! All is working awesome.
Spent the weekend:
- Creating “our theme” with navigation, styling and such.
- Created all 14 courses in LearnDash (just the basics). Plan is to fully create each course and populate with all content…except the videos. That will be last. This way, we can get people in our elite training at BadAss Island sooner, than later. Videos will be the last part.
- Instead of forums, we are linking PeepSo groups (just like a facebook group) to each LearnDash course.
Each group has a discussion wall. Here, students can ask questions, post challenges, etc. They will get help from us, and others, and celebrate their victories. Right now, we are calling these “support huts.” (this name may change and is open to ideas).
Students can “transfer” their points to others as an expression of gratitude when they get stuck on a certain obstacle, and others help out.
When a student enters into an obstacle zone (learndash course), they have 2 options: 1) Support Hut 2) Enter the Course
Overall, the basics are in place. And, we are very happy with how things look and are turning out. Feels WAY more fluid than the standard Social Learner option.
Now, we still have some “theme logic” to work out and things will change, just as they would with any LMS system…as we actually build our full course.
April 23, 2018 at 8:30 am #74043This is all sounding so brilliant @movethinksmile Sounds like something I can take back to my web man so that I get my courses on my site rather than on Teachable. I realise that I’m going to have to spend time re-reading what you’ve posted and working it through in my mind. Looking forward to tonight’s session.
April 23, 2018 at 12:39 pm #74056Thank you so much @movethinksmile what you shared in the coaching call was brilliant. Really inspiring. Am going to go look at it all.
